Resources for Disability Knowledge

People with disabilities are very diverse; there are many different types of impairments or conditions we might experience, which will impact the types of accommodations we may need. These resources are meant to help you better understand specific disabilities or conditions that customers, clients, employees, contractors, consultants, or other individuals in your community may experience and how you can support our full inclusion.

1% of people speak in a way that is unique to most: they stutter. Stuttering is a neurological communication disability that impacts the flow of speech. Contrary to frequent media representation, stuttering is not an indicator of nervousness, stress, or an intelligence difference, nor is it a "defect" in our speech. It is, simply put, a different way of speaking. Though some may naturally grow out of the stutter, for many there is no cure and stutterers become pressured to hide their natural voice in search of a faster and more “correct” way to speak. Due to social stigma and systemic barriers, someone who stutters may face significant communication challenges on an everyday basis.

SPACE is a nonprofit organization creating a more inclusive and accessible world for people who stutter. Through community-led programming, arts initiatives, listening workshops, and systemic advocacy, we address the barriers preventing people who stutter from participating fully in public life. SPACE operates from the universal design principle that when we improve listening environments for people who stutter, everyone benefits. In short, we create a world that listens better to people who stutter, and everyone else.
